"LPG Matiz 2009's most thriftiest wheels" - Quentin Wilson

So far the most promising motor of 2009 has to be the Three Euro Car.

German firm Fahrmitgas (Go With Gas) are planning a production run of specially-converted Chevrolet Matizes which will cover 100km (62.5miles) for three Euros – or around £3.

As well as an LPG conversion, you also get fuel-saving stop-start technology, reduced ride height and eco tyres.

The 796cc gas-powered three-pot engine chucks out 15 per cent less CO2 than its petrol counterpart and
returns the equivalent of over 80mpg. And it’s likely to be offered as a stock model at Chevrolet dealers some time this year.

Trouble is, it will probably weigh in at around eight grand. But there’s no need to wait or pay that much.

With year-old Matizes available at supermarkets for just £3,499, it’s perfectly possible to make your own Three Euro Car.

An approved gas conversion, plus a set of eco tyres, would leave you change from two grand – so you’d have your very own nearly-new Three Euro Car for less than £5,500.

No other motor in Europe can claim to cover so many miles for so little and with LPG selling for just 49p a litre, the financial logic is irresistible. An LPG Matiz just might be 2009’s thriftiest wheels bar none.
