LPG vehicles help Royal Parks to first ever Motorvate silver award

The Royal Parks Agency, which manages London’s 5,000 acres of parkland has earned the first ever Energy Saving Trust “Motorvate” silver award for the level of reduced carbon output.

A factor in this success is that 19 out of the 26 vehicles run on LPG.

David Jordan, fleet manager for the Royal Parks and assistant park manager at Hyde Park, says that LPG was introduced to the fleet in 1999 when the previous fleet manager negotiated a contract to install LPG fuel bunkers at foutr of the parks at £160 each. Maintenance currently costs £100 a year.

Converting a vehicle to run on LPG costs around £2000. The fuel is supplied at about 50p per litre – considereably cheaper than the current price of diesel.

Aside from the cost savings, the reason for introducing LPG was better air quality (in comparison with diesel) which is important to the Royal Parks green credentials
